Materials List for Plein Aire I & II

For beginning painters, you can either bring the suggested colors listed below, or you may purchase a standard set of colors, such as the following:

From Michael's, Artist's Loft brand carries sets of paint. Each set is $4.99/piece.

1.) 12 color set of oil paints, or acrylics, or watercolors
2.) Brush set, use the 8 piece set of bristle brushes for oil paints, and set of synthetic brushes for acrylics and watercolors.
3.) palette pad

8" X 10", or 9" X 12", canvas, or canvas panel, or canvas board

Prior to class, please note: If you buy prepared canvas or panels or boards, and they are on an acrylic ground, which most are when purchased locally, then you can use acrylic paint to tone your canvas. For this, please buy a small tube of "earth"red acrylic paint. Any of the following colors will be fine: Venetian red, English red, transparent red ochre, etc.. Using an approx 3” wide cheap house-painting brush, and having thinned paint with water, brush side-to-side horizontally across canvas lightly (thin paint a lot). Allow white of canvas or gessoed board to show through a bit. Aim for the effect of a mere veil of color.
