July 29, 11:30 a.m.: "Fine Art vs Illustration" Golden Age American Illustration, Abstract Expressionisim and the politics of the Cold War
Bring your lunch for a lecture by James Werner: A look at the art of “The Greatest Generation” and how the Great Depression, Capitalism, Socialism, Fascism, WWII and the politics of the cold war all shaped the artistic styles to emerge from the 1930s -1960s. Social Realists along with American Illustrators like JC Leyendecker, NC Wyeth, Norman Rockwell and others continued to preserve painting traditions and document historical events through graphic storytelling, while the Fine Art World gravitated toward new totally non representational art. Modern Masters of abstraction like Pollock and de Kooning became household names and dominated the fine art museums as examples of the new geniuses of the day while realist painters were often blacklisted or confined to the pages of magazines selling products. The lecture will help attendees identify artists and styles as well as open a dialogue about commercial and governmental influences on art and the relationship to popular culture. Free for members, $10 donation suggested
