KIDS: Drawing Magic! Come discover the Magic of ART!

Where the Wild Things Are!  Maurice Sendak's wonderful imagery will inspire the art projects this session.
Watercolor, Pen and ink, and pastels will be used as well as collages.

Class locations vary throughout Tippecanoe county with emphasis on natural landscapes, featuring trees,
clouds, water, meadows, and occasional architectural structures. Together the class is studying John E.
Carlson's "Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting", with focus upon two chapters each week. In addition
to the information in the text, Susan shares her vast knowledge of representational painting, from developing
your compositional intent to identifying your particular stylistic tendencies to the basics of the tactile powers
of paint and more. Oil, acrylic, and watercolor painters are welcome.

Traditional Portrait Technique   Museum members/$120, Non members $135
Tuesdays - 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Beginning September 7

This 6 week class will cover demonstration in various portrait media including charcoal, pastel and oil.
Students are encouraged to work in the media of their choice. A live model will be provided. The classes will
be focused on traditional realistic methods and all skill levels and stylistic interests are welcome. Long pose
life study affords participants a chance to learn from nature and explore rendering the portrait in great detail.

Figurative Painting with Susan Doster  
Level: Beginning/Intermediate

Materials List

Classes meet on Thursdays, from 6 to 9 pm, in the museum studio.  We will learn directly from the old master's
techniques for figurative painting as we work from the live model. Class objective is geared towards nurturing
individual talent while developing abilities of each artist to improve their expression through figurative art. 
We will study anatomy, proportion, basic formal concepts, and methods and materials of great figurative
artists throughout history.We will further develop and refine  attention to gesture,  value, line, color
temperature and color hue, through a combination of both short and long model poses. If you love drawing
and painting the figure and portraiture, then this class is designed to inspire you!

WATERCOLOR with Lorie Amick                                                   Museum members: $95

For all levels. This class is for anyone who would like to venture into the wonderful world of watercolors.
Students are given a brief introduction to various technical aspects of watercolor, including paper types,
brush types, and characteristics of different pigments. Students paint from still life set-ups and are
encouraged to bring in their own objects. Each class meeting has a different emphasis, such as composition,
color theory, use of value and different painting techniques, adjusted based on the needs of the class.
Classes do not have to be consecutive; students are given a punch card for 6 sessions to be used within

ARCHIVAL REVIVAL  Darkroom Open for Black and White Printing Sessions

  A $40 4-session pass is available for members

The darkroom will be open for black and white film enthusiasts age 16 and older.
Chemistry provided, just BYOP (bring your own paper) and negatives.

SCULPTURE with Susan Doster                   Museum Members $120 + 80 model fee

3:45 - 6:45 p.m.

A new sculpture session begins…Sculpting the figure in clay.  Sculpting water-based clay figures from model. 
Terra cotta pieces fired at the museum at conclusion of classes. Sculpting begins with noting key points
(boney landmarks) on figure as these correspond to basic geometric conceptions of form  and then building
upon that in subsequent sessions from live model.  The process combines perceptual and conceptual thinking.
Bring drawing pad and charcoal or pencil to first class. No experience necessary.
All skill levels welcome!

POTTERY I - Introduction to Clay for Adults

ABOUT THE CLASS:
In Pottery I, students will learn:
•  to create both functional and non-functional stoneware pottery forms using the potter’s wheel, slab
   roller, extruder, molds, and bare hands!
•  to incorporate texture in raw clay forms through carving, appliqué, sprigging, and stamping.
•  to apply color to raw and bisqued clay with slips, stains, and underglazes.
•  to glaze pottery by dipping, pouring and painting.
•  to analyze and discuss pottery forms through group critique, using pottery terms and an 
   understanding of craftsmanship and the elements and principles of design.
•  to interpret and evaluate individual work in relation to both historic and contemporary examples

note: Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a outdoor Raku firing.

           Fee includes 25 lbs clay; glazes; tools; firings; use of all studio equipment

ABOUT THE CLASS: Pottery II is a directed studio class in which adult students will master more advanced
wheel and handbuilding techniques, and also have the opportunity for independent work.  Students will:
•  learn advanced production and decorating techniques with attention to craftsmanship and design
•  have the opportunity to work with various clay bodies, including Raku
•  set individual goals for wheel, handbuilding, or both.
•  apply her/his awareness of the elements & principles of design in clay from actual construction to final
   firing
•  study and research the techniques and work of contemporary potters through current publications,
   books, and internet resources.
•  participate in group discussion, analysis and critique.

Independent Pottery Studio

CLASS SIZE:   Limited to 10 students

ABOUT THE CLASS: Independent Pottery is a 16-week, supervised studio opportunity for adult
students with a solid background and knowledge of clay as an art form, craftsmanship, and
technique.  Students will be expected to:
•  set individual production goals
•  participate in group discussion, analysis and critique.
•  learn and assist with behind-the-scenes studio needs: loading kilns; mixing and testing glazes;
   building and firing Raku kilns; etc.
•  plan and present an exhibit of class work

Independent Pottery students will have the opportunity to:
•  Mentor Pottery I and II students during general open studio times
•  Serve as teaching assistants in beginning classes
•  Assist with special community classes and workshops
